Hardware Options

Memory Options

The model 830 supports from 1GB to 64GB of memory or main storage. Memory features are available in the following capacities. Up to 64 memory slots are available. Memory features or DIMMs are plugged in octals of the same capacity.

  • 128MB
  • 256MB
  • 512MB
  • 1GB

I/O Towers

Up to 13 PCI I/O towers or expansion units can be attached to the Model 830 via High Speed Link (HSL) loop. The 830 supports up to four HSL loops.

These towers or expansion units include:

  • #5074 PCI I/O Tower a .9 meter tall tower with up to 45 disk drive slots and 14 PCI slots
  • #5079 PCI I/O Tower a 1.8 meter tall tower/rack with 90 disk drive slots and 28 PCI slots
  •  #5078 PCI Expansion Unit a compact unit mounted on top of a 5074 with 14 PCI slots
  • #0578 PCI Expansion Unit a compact drawer mounted in a rack with 14 PCI slots

Disk Options

.iSeries supports either internal or external disk drives.

iSeries native (internal) disk drives are physically housed in iSeries system unit or expansion towers. They are ordered by iSeries feature code numbers. Currently IBM offers 17.54GB or 35.16 disk drives for iSeries Model 830. 8.58GB drives are also available through December, 2002. These drives are supported by iSeries disk controllers and I/O processors within the iSeries which provide additional performance and reliability benefits.

  •  #4318 17.54GB disk drive, 10k rpm
  •  #4319 35.16GB disk drive, 10k rpm
  •  #4317 8.58GB disk drive, 10k rpm ( available through December 2002 )

Disk mirroring and RAID-5 support is built into OS/400 for internal drives. Current disk controller offerings include:

  • #4778 is available on all iSeries running V5R1 or later. It supports up to 15 internal disk drives and two internal removable media devices (CD-ROM, DVD-RAM or tape drive). It has effectively 104MB write cache and RAID-5 capability. At least four drives are required for a RAID set.
  • #2766 is available for all iSeries running V5R1 or later. It supports attaching external disk via a Fibre Channel connection.

The Model 830 can support multiple disk drive sizes (capacities) which can be mixed, but most customers choose to keep them close to the same size within a OS/400 partition or OS/400 ASP for operational flexibility and balanced performance considerations. The base 830 has space for 15 internal disk drives which can be expanded to 45 disk slots. Combined with optional, physically separate PCI expansion towers, up to 630 disk slots as well as additional PCI slots are available.

Save/Restore Options

Internal tape drives are physically enclosed in iSeries and AS/400 system or expansion towers. They are ordered by feature code numbers associated with the iSeries or AS/400. QIC (Quarter Inch Cartridge) technology is the most commonly used internal tape technology on iSeries due to its cost effectiveness, performance, packaging convenience and reliability. Internal QIC drives include:

  • 4GB tape drive (8GB with typical 2x compression)
  • 30GB tape drive (60GB with typical 2x compression)
  • 50GB tape drive (100GB with typical 2x compression)

The Model 830 has space for two internal removable media devices. One must be either a CD-ROM or a DVD-RAM. The other can be an internal tape drive. To reduce cost and save PCI slots, the internal tape drives are usually driven by the same PCI controller which drives the internal disk drives. External tape drives can also be used, but a separate PCI tape controller must be used.

Tape drives that are ordered with their own type/serial number and housed outside of the iSeries system units or expansion towers are called external tape drives. Shops using IBM tape libraries or the largest/fastest possible tape drives will usually use external tape. Current examples include the IBM LTO 3580 Ultrium and IBM Magstar 3590. External QIC and 8mm options are also available.

iSeries supports several tape controllers or Magnetic Media Controllers which support external tape drives include:

  • #2749 PCI Ultra Magnetic Media Controller for a high speed SCSI connection
  • #2765 PCI Fibre Channel Tape Controller for a high speed Fibre Channel connection
  • #2768 PCI Magnetic Media Controller for a lower speed SCSI connection

LAN/WAN Options

Using PCI I/O adapters (IOAs) iSeries supports the popular connections including:

  • PCI 10/100 Ethernet IOA
  • PCI 1Gbps Ethernet IOA using Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cabling
  • PCI 1Gbps Ethernet IOA using multimode fiber media (fiber optic) cabling
  • PCI 100/16/4Mbps Token Ring IOA
  • PCI 2-Line WAN IOA with two, one or zero integrated modems
  • PCI 4-Line WAN IOA
  • PCI Twinax workstation controller

Rack Options

The Model 830 does not require a rack. It is a stand-alone unit.
