Cisco 7000 Series

The standard system requires one Route Processor and one Switch Processor (or Silicon Switch Processor). An upgraded RSP7000 system requires one 7000 series Route Switch Processor (RSP7000) and one 7000 series Chassis Interface (RSP7000CI). Processors can be ordered in two ways: as spares or as upgrades.

Cisco offers the RSP7000, which is available as an upgrade kit for existing Cisco 7000 and Cisco 7010 systems. The RSP7000 significantly increases the performance for most features and protocols and provides a migration path that enables Cisco 7000 and Cisco 7010 systems to take advantage of advanced VIP features.

Cisco IOS Releases 10.3(9), 11.0(6), 11.1(1), and later support the RSP7000 upgrade.

The RSP7000 upgrade consists of the following:

  • Upgrade instructions (included in upgrade kit)

  • RSP7000 (included in upgrade kit)

  • RSP7000CI (included in upgrade kit)

  • PCMCIA Flash memory card (8 MB is the default if not specified)

A Cisco 7000 series router with an RSP7000 upgrade requires a Cisco IOS feature set and feature set license supporting the RSP.

The RSP7000 has the same interface processor compatibility requirements as the Cisco 7500 series router. In Cisco 7000 routers, the RSP7000 must be installed in the SP (or SSP) slot, and the RSP7000CI must be installed in the RP slot. The RSP7000 cannot be used in a Cisco 7500 series router, and an RSP1, RSP2, or RSP4 cannot be used in a Cisco 7000 series router.

DRAM Guidelines

Use the following guidelines when ordering DRAM for the Cisco 7000 series:

  • For the RSP7000, DRAM is contained in four SIMM slots (two banks of two SIMMs each).

  • For the RSP7000, bank 0 must be greater than or equal to bank 1.

  • Do not mix DRAM sizes within a bank.

32 MB of DRAM is shipped with the RSP7000 as the default. Although some small network configurations might be able to run with 24 MB of DRAM, the standard 32 MB is recommended.

Small networks efficiently support fewer than 2000 IP routes.

Medium networks efficiently support 2000 to 10,000 IP routes.

Large networks efficiently support more than 10,000 IP routes.
